Measure the frame, not the glass
For most made-to-measure honeycomb shades, the glass size is not enough. You need the usable frame width, usable height, depth, and any parts that might hit the shade.
Use a metal tape measure and write down the unit used by the seller. Japanese listings often use centimeters or millimeters, while overseas shoppers may think in inches.
| Measurement | How to take it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Measure top, middle, and bottom | Frames are not always perfectly square. |
| Height | Measure left, center, and right | Prevents dragging or leaving a large bottom gap. |
| Depth | Measure usable flat depth | Tension brackets need enough surface to hold. |
| Obstacles | Check handles and locks | Prevents the shade from hitting hardware. |
Inside mount and outside mount use different logic
Inside mount keeps the shade clean and compact, but it can leave side gaps. Outside mount can cover more light leakage, but it usually needs a place to fix the bracket.
For rental rooms, tension mount is attractive because it stays inside the frame. For blackout bedrooms, outside mount or layering with curtains may perform better if screws are allowed.
Convert units carefully at checkout
Do not round casually. If the seller uses millimeters, keep your measurement in millimeters until the final option is selected.
Also read whether the seller automatically subtracts clearance. Some shops want the exact frame size; others want the final finished size. This single detail can decide whether the shade fits.
- Take photos of the window frame and measuring tape.
- Record width, height, depth, and the unit.
- Read the seller measuring diagram before selecting size.
- Save the selected options before payment.
